A hard working part of a growing corporation she is rather brilliant at her job which the CEO recognizes and promises her a promotion in the near future. She dresses dowdy, downright schlubby, she is socially awkward, a messy eater, and longs to be a contestant on Survivor, the popular TV show. Her book cases are lined with books about Surviving in the Wilderness, but she never makes the cut.

When her boss dies and his entitled, deeply arrogant son, Bradley (Dylan O’Brien) is promoted he makes it clear Linda will never be promoted. As a way of making fun of her he sends her on a trip to Japan with he and his inner circle, expecting her brains and report to close the lucrative deal. On the flight the men humiliate Linda by laughing at the YouTube video of her audition for Survivor. Just then the plane has serious trouble and begins a fast, violent descent into the sea. After horrific deaths, the only two survivors are Linda and her arrogant boss, who she finds on the beach, very broken.

Bradley watches in shock as she thrives in the jungle and on the beach, she hunts, she feeds them, she gives him shelter and heals him. She is a born survivor and an absolute force of nature in the jungle. And as her clothes tear and expose her legs and body, she is a sexy woman.

Still Bradley is a monster to her, ungrateful, spiteful, insulting. Linda takes so much then stops feeding him, making it clear he is to treat her decently, or not be fed. He of course comes crawling back and for a short time they have peace, even a sense of growing fond of one another. He knows she could be dangerous as she killed a huge wild boar with a homemade spear and her hands, but in a silly move attempts to poison her with wild berries and escapes. He does not get far as the tide washes him back on shore, humiliated, found out and beaten.

Linda wants never to be found as she is in her element, and what she does to ensure they are not found is murderous. In the end she achieves something she never thought she would have, but at a terrible cost.

Rachel McAdams gives the finest performance of her career as the quietly ferocious Linda, who proves a master of survival. She has never been cast in a role like this except perhaps her queen bee in Mean Girls (2004) so many years age. When she hunts she is a dead eyed killer, when she eats, a woman in her glory, absolutely at home. Even when she is forced to kill, she is defending a lifestyle she has embraced. It is a superb performance that gives the film life, its soul.

O’Brien has much less to do but is a perfect bastard with his simpering and treachery. He knows he is physically out gunned but he also knows he is far more cruel than Linda and waits for her guard to be down. What he does not count on is her capacity for revenge.

Sam Raimi has not directed a great film since A Simple Plan (1998), Spider-Man (2002) and the masterful Spider-Man 2 (2004) thus it is great to see him back making such a substantial picture. He may over do the blood and gore throughout, but it does not dim the impact of the film of the sensational Oscar bound performance of McAdams. Darkly brilliant.

Linda (Rachel McAdams) is a predator in sheep’s clothing.
